New Zealand is full of breathtaking scenery at every turn and Lake Tekapo is certainly a site you cannot miss while visiting. The blue water reminded me of Thailand but it comes from a glacier instead (crazy)!  By day, the lake is stunning with it’s electric turquoise color and by night it’s perfect for stargazing, being a  part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve. It’s best to get both day/night photos, so I recommend having accommodation nearby.

How To Get Around New Zealand:

New Zealand: Lake Tekapo

Renting A Car: This is a MUST while visiting NZ, as most of its’ sights are far apart. Be sure to rent/bring a GPS, especially if you won’t have internet access on your phone. For 2 weeks, we rented a car for about $600USD (around $40USD/day). Note: New Zealander’s drive on the opposite side of the road as Americans, so this is a BIG adjustment at first! Be careful!

RV Rental: Many people rent a camper van/motor home and utilize that is both transport and accommodation (we’ll be doing this next time!). Juicy Rentals is by far the most popular. A standard camper van will cost about $1470 for 2 weeks (around $105USD/day). Don’t forget to factor gas in your budget.

How To Get To Lake Tekapo:

New Zealand: Lake Tekapo & The Church of the Good Shepherd
Lake Tekao is truly beautiful!

Lake Tekapo is a 3-hour drive west of Christchurch, a 3-hour drive north of Queenstown and a 1.5-hour journey from Mount Cook. This makes it a central location as a long day trip from both major cities in the South, or a stopping point along the way between the two.

The Church of the Good Shepherd:

The Church Of The Good Shepherd is definitely a sight to see!

Lake Tekapo’s iconic landmark, The Church of the Good Shepherd was built in 1935 as a memorial to the pioneers of the Mackenzie region. Be sure to see the New Zealand collie sheepdog statue nearby as well!
